A JOYFUL SIGHT TO BEHOLD! (Advent - Day 19)

Text: “17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child…”(Luke 2:17)

Remember the story of the shepherds out in the field, watching their sheep? The Angel of the Lord appears and delivers the wonderful news that a Saviour had been born!

After they received the Good News of Christ’s birth and witnessed the Angelic Choir, these sheep-herding colleagues look at each other and say: “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” (v15). 16 So they hurried off....”

What did they see when they got there?

There, in a smelly barn in Bethlehem, laid in an animal feeding trough, amidst the bleating of sheep and the lowing of cows, these shepherds saw what they had only heard about; these humble, lowly down-to-earth men saw in Jesus, a down-to-earth God; these shepherds who were used to rearing lambs, saw in Bethlehem’s manger, the lamb of God that would take away the sins of the world.

What they saw that night was not a cute little baby with dimples whose tummy was to be tickled. Who they saw that night was Immanuel, God in the flesh. Who they saw that night was God’s gift of love to the world!

They saw a Saviour that was worthy to be proclaimed/spoken about. Friends, do you see what they saw? Do you see in the Christmas child a Saviour that’s worthy to be proclaimed/ spoken about?

Pause and reflect:

· What do you think the Shepherds were feeling when they saw Jesus?

· Have you too experienced the joy that these shepherds felt?

PRAYER:

Fill me with joy that those shepherds felt;

Joy overflowing, outpouring to those around;

Let me go tell, go share and proclaim,

May the Good News of peace abound.
