“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!’”Mark 9:24 (NIV)
Doubt is something we all wrestle with at times, isn’t it? It often creeps in when life feels uncertain or when prayers seem unanswered. Imagine Joseph’s initial doubt when he learned of Mary’s pregnancy. How could he comprehend what God was doing? Yet, through the angel’s message and his faith in God, Joseph moved forward in obedience and trust.
Doubt isn’t the absence of faith—it’s an opportunity to deepen it.
Like the father in Mark’s gospel, we can bring our doubts to God, knowing He doesn’t reject us for questioning. Instead, He invites us to seek Him more fully.
Advent is a season of waiting and trusting, even when the path isn’t clear. It reminds us that God’s faithfulness isn’t dependent on our certainty. He is with us in the struggle, gently guiding us through moments of doubt to places of deeper faith and understanding.
Mental Health Moment
Doubt can be unsettling, but reframing it as a tool for growth can make it less intimidating. When doubt arises, ask yourself: “What evidence do I have for and against this doubt?” Writing this down can help you see that doubt often lacks a solid foundation, allowing space for trust and clarity.
Let’s Reflect
• What doubts are you holding onto right now?
• How can you invite God to work through those doubts and strengthen your faith?
“Faith is not the absence of doubt; it is the means to overcome it.” Unknown
Prayer
Lord, You see my doubts and uncertainties. Help me to bring them to You with honesty and openness. Strengthen my faith, even when I cannot see the way forward. Thank You for loving me in my moments of questioning and for leading me closer to You. Amen.
