"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
Have you ever been lonely? Surrounded by a crowd at work, on the train, at an event, but still lonely? Loneliness can feel like a heavy weight—a reminder of the spaces in our lives that feel empty.
During Advent, a season often associated with connection and joy, loneliness can feel even more profound. But loneliness is not new to the human experience. Before the angel appeared to announce the birth of Jesus, the shepherds kept watch in solitude, far from the warmth of their community.
Yet, it was in this isolation that they received the most beautiful message of all: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10). Their loneliness was broken by the presence of God’s glory.
In our lonely moments, we can find comfort in knowing that God is near. He sees us, knows us, and promises to walk with us. Loneliness, while painful, can also be a space where we experience God’s presence more deeply—a reminder that we are never truly alone.
Mental Health Moment
Loneliness is a common experience, but it doesn’t have to define you. Simple steps like:
reaching out to someone,
engaging in meaningful activities, or
practicing self-compassion
can help ease the burden.

Prayer
Lord, in moments of loneliness, draw me closer to You. Remind me that I am seen, loved, and valued. Help me to reach out to others and to find peace in Your presence. Amen.
