"Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes" Psalm 37:7 (NIV).
Long queues at the supermarket, back-to-back traffic on the motorway, saying the same thing over and over to a stubborn child. In some way or another, we've all been there - having to heed the call to patience! Patience is a virtue we admire in others but often struggle to cultivate within ourselves.
The Advent season reminds us of the beauty of waiting—waiting for God’s promises, waiting for answers, and waiting for the fulfilment of His plans. For generations, the people of Israel waited for the promised Messiah, holding onto faith even when hope seemed far off.
Patience isn’t passive. It’s an active trust in God’s timing, even when life feels uncertain or delayed.
Mary and Joseph exemplified patience as they embarked on their journey to Bethlehem. They didn’t know the exact outcome of their story, yet they moved forward in faith, trusting that God’s plan was unfolding.
In our fast-paced world, waiting can feel like a burden. But Advent teaches us to slow down, reflect, and embrace the process. Patience reminds us that God’s timing is perfect and that the waiting season often brings growth, clarity, and strength.
Mental Health moment
Practicing patience can reduce stress and build resilience. When faced with delays or uncertainties, try mindfulness exercises or deep breathing to stay grounded. Recognise that the waiting period is an opportunity for personal growth and reflection, not just a delay.
Let's reflect
What is one area of your life where you’re struggling to be patient?
How might God be using this waiting season to shape or prepare you?
"Patience is not simply the ability to wait—it’s how we behave while we’re waiting."— Joyce Meyer
Prayer
Lord, teach me to wait with grace and trust in Your perfect timing. Help me to embrace the waiting season as a time of growth and preparation. Give me strength when I feel weary and faith when I feel uncertain. Amen.
