“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”Colossians 3:12 (NIV)
How can showing compassion to yourself and others create space for healing and connection?
Compassion is the heartbeat of Advent. It invites us to extend God’s love to others while also offering kindness to ourselves. When Jesus came into the world, He embodied compassion—healing the brokenhearted, restoring the outcast, and showing love to all, regardless of their circumstances.
In this busy season, we often focus on serving others, but true compassion starts with caring for ourselves as well.
Like Mary and Joseph, who endured great challenges on their journey to Bethlehem, we need moments to rest and receive God’s care.
Advent is a time to embrace compassion as both an inward and outward gift. It means being present for others in their struggles while also being gentle with your own limitations. Compassion creates space for healing, connection, and peace, reflecting the love of Christ in all we do.
Mental Health Moment
Practicing compassion for yourself can improve emotional resilience and mental well-being. Try this: When you make a mistake or feel overwhelmed, pause and ask yourself, “What would I say to a friend in this situation?” Then, offer those same words of encouragement to yourself.
Let’s Reflect
• Who in your life might need your compassion this week?
• How can you extend that same compassion to yourself?
“Compassion is at the heart of every good deed. It starts with seeing others and yourself through the eyes of grace.” Unknown
Prayer
Lord, teach me to be compassionate, both to others and to myself. Help me to see the needs of those around me and respond with grace and kindness. Fill my heart with Your love so I can reflect it in my actions. Let compassion be my guide this Advent season. Amen.
